IP address lookup
What is an IP address lookup?
An IP address lookup queries geolocation databases to determine the approximate physical location of an IP address, as well as its associated ISP, organisation, and connection type. This information is publicly available and is used for content localisation, fraud detection, network security, and analytics.
IP geolocation is not exact — it typically identifies the city or region level. Mobile and VPN IP addresses are often associated with the VPN provider's location rather than the actual user's location. This tool uses the ipapi.co API to retrieve location data.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is typically accurate to the country level (99%+) and city level (60–80%). It is less reliable for mobile connections, VPNs, and satellite internet. It should not be used as a definitive location indicator.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a unique identifier assigned to a network controlled by a single organisation. ISPs, cloud providers, and large companies each have their own ASN. Knowing the ASN tells you which organisation controls the network block the IP belongs to.
Can I look up a private IP address?
No. Private IP ranges (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x) are used within local networks and are not routed on the public internet. They have no geolocation data.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 192.168.1.1) with about 4.3 billion possible addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (e.g. 2001:db8::1) with vastly more addresses. IPv6 was developed because IPv4 addresses were exhausted.
