What is a Satoshi?
A Satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after the pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. One Bitcoin equals 100 million Satoshis (10⁸). Satoshis make it possible to transact in very small amounts of Bitcoin, especially as the price per Bitcoin increases.
Other common denominations include mBTC (millibitcoin, one thousandth of a Bitcoin) and μBTC (microbitcoin or "bit", one millionth of a Bitcoin). This converter uses live prices fetched from a public API.
Frequently asked questions
How many Satoshis are in one Bitcoin?
One Bitcoin equals exactly 100,000,000 Satoshis (one hundred million). This is 10 to the power of 8, which is why Bitcoin has 8 decimal places.
What is the difference between Satoshi, mBTC and μBTC?
1 BTC = 1,000 mBTC = 1,000,000 μBTC = 100,000,000 Satoshi. mBTC (millibitcoin) is one thousandth of a Bitcoin. μBTC or "bit" is one millionth. Satoshi is the smallest indivisible unit.
Why are Satoshis useful?
As Bitcoin's price increases, quoting prices in full Bitcoin becomes impractical. Lightning Network transactions, fees, and micropayments are denominated in Satoshis. "Stacking sats" has become common shorthand for accumulating small amounts of Bitcoin.
